Triathlon & Open Water
Swim Training

“Great results require great ambition.” — Heraclitus

A path for confident swimmers who want to go further, faster — and master the ocean.

Strong Enough to Begin… But Not Yet Complete

They can already swim.

They’ve completed lessons, built their confidence, and maybe even swam a kilometre or more.

But something’s still missing.

Their freestyle feels clunky.
Their breath breaks their rhythm.
And when the ocean gets choppy, control slips away.

They’ve signed up for their first triathlon… or dream of doing it.
They want to swim from Manly to Shelly.
Or maybe just keep up with their mates on a weekend ocean swim.

They’re not after swim lessons.

They’re after a breakthrough.

They’re looking for precision.
Power.
And peace of mind that they can hold form — even when the waves come.

This isn’t about learning how to swim.
It’s about learning how to swim well.

Why This Training Matters

Most adult swimmers don’t need another set of drills.
They need refinement. Repetition. Rhythm under stress.

Public swim squads often push for speed — not form.
Group classes move too slowly — or don’t push you far enough.

And when you’re racing…
it’s your technique that endures the pressure.

Breath control, streamlined form, energy conservation — that’s what separates a finisher from a fighter.

That’s why we offer one-on-one triathlon swim coaching:
Real-world training for real-world races.

We tailor each session to your body, your goals, and your timeline — whether you’re preparing for a local ocean swim, a half Ironman, or your first triathlon leg.

What You’ll Get – Tailored Private Sessions
  • One-on-one lessons at your home or apartment pool
  • Assigned only to advanced swim teachers with triathlon or competitive experience
  • Personalised pacing, endurance drills, stroke correction under fatigue
  • Strategy for wetsuit swimming, breath control, sighting, transitions
  • Optional race simulation blocks
  • Progress tracking by distance, timing, and feel

Where possible, we recommend progressing to ocean rock pools or netted beach areas.
These environments offer a safe yet dynamic introduction to saltwater, currents, and open water confidence — all under the guidance of your Nereids coach.

Note: Due to insurance limitations, we only train in pools, rock pools, or netted beach areas — not the open ocean.

What You’ll Learn – Key Race-Ready Skills

Whether you're preparing for your first sprint triathlon or chasing a personal best in open water, your sessions will target the skills that matter most in real races:

Stroke Efficiency

Develop smoother, more sustainable strokes (freestyle and/or breaststroke), refined for endurance under pressure.

Breath Control & Rhythm

Train your breath timing, bilateral breathing (if suitable), and recovery rhythm — so fatigue doesn’t break your form.

Open Water Adaptation

Learn how to sight while swimming, maintain direction in choppy water, and handle race-day unpredictability calmly.

Wetsuit Familiarity & Transitions

Practice wetsuit mobility and simulate swim-bike transitions to reduce shock and improve flow on race day.

Race Psychology

Build mental resilience, pre-race rituals, and focus strategies — so nerves don’t sabotage your swim.

Where We Train

All lessons take place at your own pool — whether at home, in an apartment complex, or a location you have access to.

We also offer triathlon coaching at rock pools or netted beaches (such as those found in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs or Northern Beaches), provided they meet basic safety and depth requirements.

Not sure if your location is suitable?
Just book a quick call and we’ll guide you step by step.

Important Note: Open Water Restrictions

While many of our clients train for ocean swims and triathlons, our insurance only covers coaching in enclosed aquatic environments — such as:

  • Private home pools
  • Apartment complex pools
  • Rock pools
  • Netted beaches with shark protection

We do not offer open water sessions in unprotected ocean areas.

That said, your coach will guide you with techniques to simulate open water scenarios during your pool-based lessons — including breath control, sighting, wetsuit strategy, and pacing under fatigue.

You’ll be fully prepared — even if your race starts in the surf.

Want to Race? Here Are Some Popular Events

Training without a goal can feel aimless. That’s why many of our students choose a race — not just for competition, but for focus, motivation, and a sense of achievement.

Here are some popular options in Sydney and across Australia:

Manly to Shelly Swim
A calm and iconic short ocean swim (1.5 km) — perfect for first-timers

Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim
One of Australia’s most famous open water races — 2.4 km with light swell conditions

Cole Classic (Manly)
A yearly highlight offering 1km, 2km, and 5km distances — suitable for a wide range of levels

Noosa Triathlon
Australia’s largest triathlon — an excellent long-term goal for beginner or intermediate triathletes

Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie
A serious challenge with a 1.9 km swim leg — for those aiming higher

Other great events across Australia include:
Port to Pub (WA) – a stunning but demanding open water challenge
Ironman Cairns / Melbourne / Sunshine Coast – part of the international Ironman series

Not sure which event fits you?
Your coach can help you choose a race, reverse-engineer your training plan, and get you ready — one stroke at a time.

Common Questions About Triathlon & Open Water Swim Coaching
I can already swim. Is this for me?

This program is designed specifically for swimmers who want to refine technique, build endurance, and prepare for real race conditions. If you can swim at least 50 metres but want better efficiency, speed, or confidence in open water, this is your next step.

What if I’m training for a triathlon or ocean swim?

Perfect. That’s exactly who this coaching is for. Whether it’s your first event or your tenth, we’ll help you improve your form, stamina, and race-day confidence — one focused session at a time.

Can you help me get faster?

Absolutely. Our coaches work on stroke mechanics under fatigue, efficient breathing, sighting, pacing, and transitions. You’ll swim smarter — and faster — with less wasted energy.

Do you offer open water training?

We currently train only in enclosed and safe aquatic environments: home and apartment pools, ocean rock pools, or netted beach areas. Our insurance does not cover fully open water sessions (e.g. beyond the nets or out in the ocean).

Do I need to use a wetsuit?

You’re welcome to train in a wetsuit if you're preparing for a race that requires it. We can also help you adapt your technique for wetsuit-specific swimming (like buoyancy and shoulder flexibility).

Can I choose longer lessons?

Yes. While most sessions are 45 minutes, many triathletes choose 60 or 90-minute blocks — especially for endurance sets or technical refinement.

What if I’m not sure if I’m ready yet?

If you’re still working on basic water safety or swimming 50 metres confidently, we recommend starting with our Stroke Correction program — and then progressing with Triathlon coaching when you’re ready for more advanced work.

What equipment do I need?

Goggles and swimwear are essential. If you’re training with a wetsuit, bring it along. We’ll also use training aids like kickboards or snorkels depending on your goals.

What if I realise I need more time or lessons?

That’s totally okay. We’ll track your progress and guide you step by step. You can continue as needed — there’s no pressure, just the path that fits your goal.

How many lessons per week should I book?

It depends on your goals and timeline. Some athletes train weekly, others twice a week, and some in focused 2–3 week blocks leading up to an event. We’ll guide you to the pace that works best for your schedule and goals.
